Resolve to Go BIG
There are lots of challenges out there as the new year begins. Many of us are challenged to loose weight, make career advances, or in some way better ourselves. Most of the advice floating around the internet revolves around succeeding in our goals and resolutions. I have some different advice:
Get out there and FAIL! That’s right, take such a breathtaking leap this year that you are forced well beyond the end of your rope. Jump off so big that you find the end of yourself and fail in an epic way.
Why? Because out past the end of your rope you will find God. Out at the end of yourself, you will be forced to depend on a power other than yourself.
It is fine if you want to set attainable, measurable, stretch goals and then practice “goal management” for predictable success. That IS fine BUT you will not find the great, wonderful, loving, adventure filled God that way. You will find you. I am kinda bored with me so I am not that interested in attainable goals. I want to find God in a greater, more dependent way this year.
This is why the Apostle James wrote: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds…” (James 1:2, ESV) He knew, and the Bible teaches, that we find God when we step out past anything we could accomplish on our own. Look at Jonah, Noah, David, Paul, Peter and just about every other hero in the Bible.
So join me in doing something with a high failure probability.
Join me in diving into conversations about Jesus that we never would have had…
Join me in making a church that lives to reach disconnected people…
Join me in giving money away to God that ensures a lower standard of living…
Join me in serving so as to get nothing in return…
Join me in loving the unlovable and undeserving…
Let’s go BIG and fail big and so find, in our failure, the God who lifts us up and meets us there, at the end of ourselves, in the failure and struggle and in the strife.
Let’s make this year the year where we meet God; the year we take a failure destined leap!
